Meredyth Duncan

I am a marine biologist seeking my Masters degree in the San Francisco State University RIPTIDES (Research Intensive Pedagogical Training for InterDisciplinary Estuarine Scientists) program. My focus is invertebrate biology, and my areas of interest are ecology, physiology, genetics and evolution.

I have had a passion for science and the ocean from an early age. My favorite places growing up were natural history museums, aquariums, and nature centers. I have always been driven to not only experience the natural world, but to understand how it functions and how we relate to the living systems around us.

I am also very invested in public scientific literacy. I want people to see that science is interesting and exciting, and I also want people to understand how important it is. One of the most rewarding aspects of my pursuit of biology has been sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm, and using that to engage with people who otherwise have very little contact with science.

My motivation for pursuing my degree through the  interdisciplinary RIPTIDES program at SFSU is to prepare for a career where I can synthesize active research with public engagement. I hope to contribute to the preservation of our marine ecosystems as a scientist, an educator, and a mediator, and an interdisciplinary education will put me on the path to achieving this goal.
